Hurricanes: Emergency Services May Not Be Available

One of the biggest misconceptions property owners have is that police, fire, and EMS will be available throughout a hurricane. In reality, that is rarely the case.

Once sustained winds reach unsafe levels, many emergency agencies suspend normal field operations because it is no longer safe for personnel to respond. During the height of the storm, you should not expect law enforcement, firefighters, or ambulance crews to respond to calls for service unless conditions allow them to do so safely.

After the storm passes, emergency responders immediately shift their attention to life-threatening emergencies, search and rescue operations, medical calls, downed power lines, hazardous roadways, and critical infrastructure. Depending on the severity of the storm, it may take hours or even days before non-emergency calls receive a response.

During that time, commercial properties, residential communities, hotels, construction sites, and businesses are often left to protect themselves. Damaged fencing, disabled access control systems, power outages, and vacant buildings can create opportunities for theft, trespassing, vandalism, and unauthorized entry.

Professional hurricane security teams help bridge that gap by maintaining a visible presence, protecting property, documenting damage, controlling access, and providing real-time information to property owners until normal emergency services can fully resume.
